When Do I Start My Baby on Solid Food?

When it comes to starting solids, it can be REALLY overwhelming, there are so many mixed messages on the internet and during our classes we often get asked when the right time to start solids. When it comes to starting solids with your little one, there a number of different signs to look out for.

We hope this post supports you on your journey and clears up any confusion you mights have from all of the information out there on the internet!

Let’s go back to 1994! The advice in 1994? start offering solids at 4-6 months of age. In more recent years this advice has changed and the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the UK governhment now advise to start weaning at “around 6 months”.

Why is there so many mixed messages and confusion when it comes to Starting Solids?

  • Firstly, baby food manufacturers often put “from 4 months” on their packaging, this can lead to a lot of confusion for parents who are about to start their journey.

  • We often get advice from family and friends who have gone through the process and this guidance might not be in line with current guidelines.

  • Many other countries (including in Europe) recommend earlier weaning ages

So, when is the right time?

As mentioned earlier the WHO recommends from “around 6 months” which goes hand in hand with the NHS recommendations of showing the 3 signs of readiness before starting your baby on solids.

What are the three signs of readiness?

  1. Your little one can stay in a sitting position with a nice straight back and hold their head steady (they may topple over when trying to reach for something).

  2. Co-ordinate their eyes, hands and mouth for example they can pick up a toy and put it to their mouth on purpose and accurately.

  3. Lost their tongue reflex, this reflex, which causes babies to push food out of their mouths, this usually diminishes by around 4-6 months.

All babies reach milestones at different times, some babies might have reached these developmental stages at 5.5 months and others at 7 or 8 months.

Starting your baby on solid food is an exciting time. By looking for signs of readiness and following recommended guidelines, you can help support your baby on their weaning journey.
